App Review: Opentalk

In an era where texting has taken over everything and people treat phone calls as emergencies, OpenTalk - the app has brought in an interesting concept. It is an app that you can use to talk to anyone based on place, hobby, interest, career, work or just to make general conversations. There are also categories for relationships and improving English.

I think improving spoken English is one goal that can be attained through this app and its innovation. The interface is neat with a white and blue background. The 'Talk Now' button is enticing to press and once you begin the conversation, there is nothing stopping you from crossing the levels and attaining points. The reward system brings a nice sense of accomplishment and keeps you going. It is a nice touch. Your levels indicate how smooth a talker you are and the app would especially be useful to extroverts (and introverts who otherwise do not pick up the phone).

Once it shows you that it is connecting to another member, the old school ringtone starts playing which is a bit loud. I think the developers could look into this and arrange for a mellower tune. You also do not get to choose the kind of person who you want to talk to and that can be a big put off because sometimes there is just not enough chemistry to keep the talk going.

Of course, it is not about long calls and phone etiquette. It is the thrill of this whole thing that keeps the app going. Possible misuse of this app should be curbed by a "Call Record" feature.

While dialing, the app shows the city and country of the caller which is helpful but it takes away a few questions that one would have otherwise asked like, 'Where city are you from? Which country?' So, the app could benefit from removing the map feature or making it optional.

So above is an article about the pros and cons of this app. You can download it on Google Play store here https://opntlk.app.link/got and Apple iTunes store here https://itunes.apple.com/in/app/opentalk-talk-to-new-people/id1226049483.

Hope you have a good talk.

Contest: My Filmy Mother

This article is the entry for Mother's Day Bloggers Contest by Bigsmall.in, unique gift store in India.

For Mother's Day Gifts - Click Here

Hmm... this is a tough one. Which filmy mother does my mother resemble? I think she comes quite close to Sridevi's character Shashi Godbole in English Vinglish and the character played by Kirron Kher 'Bela Makhija' in Om Shanti Om. Let me explain:

My Mother : Shashi

She is not very good at English but she tries. Well, she tries but not hard enough. She is a banker and does all her official work in English but in her own words, 'Why would I read English Vinglish novels when reading the language is such an effort? I come back after a hard day at work and I want to relax and listen to some HINDI music.'

She also is a bit like Sridevi in the sense that is generally excited about new stuff. I see her marking out places to visit on map and bookmarking pages in cookery books. Of course, none of those dishes get made and none of those travels plans come to fruition but the childlike innocence with which she plans her life reminds me about the filmy mother.

My Mother : Bela Makhija

Now this character was high on drama. The way she makes kheer for her son Om Prakash Makhija and acts like everything is a huge deal - they were all larger than life filmy mother caricatures. My mom is usually a very docile lady but then there are days when her inner Bela Makhija comes to the fore. When I am going to take a short trip, she makes a truckload of matthis (a fried snack) and sneaks it all in my suitcase. When I see that suddenly all my luggage looks like it has been stuffed with ration for a month, I can tell that my mother has been at work.

She also has this way of calling out my name as if it is an emergency. I feel like the house is on fire and come running and it is usually about a wet towel on the bed or a pickle jar on the wrong shelf. Oof! The theatrics give me a heart attack.

But all these things only make her more and more adorable. I'd like to take this chance to say thanks to all the mothers out there for doing what they do. This one is for you amazing ladies.

Happy Mother's Day Mummy!

My Half Girlfriend

I am sharing a Half relationship story at BlogAdda in association with #HalfGirlfriend

This is a story from my college days. Those were the days when in-campus romances were a wee rare. I mean of course there were a sizable number of them but they were still considered a big deal. No, this was not in the early 80s. I am talking 2007. OK, maybe they were not very rare. But you get my point- we used to be shy.

This was the point when a friend of mine was dating a guy from our batch. Then some stuff happened and they broke up. Now at a party, this friend of mine ended up telling me a lot about how she had been feeling and what getting her heart broken meant for her. Basically, she told me she had sworn off guys and that should have been my red flag but this is where it gets interesting (stupid).

After the conversation, we started talking a whole lot and became quite close. We began talking on phone and the conversations went on and on. During one of our late night discussions, she confessed that she initially had a crush on me. That was enough for my heart to start pounding like a frog. I began thinking about our wedding, thinking about names of our children and what not.

The next morning, I woke up a new man. I had developed strong feelings for her. She however had forgotten what she had said in the night. She woke up the same way she was - just a good friend to me. A few days later, I asked her if she'd like to be be my girlfriend and the answer was a resounding "no".

She told me that she saw me as a friend and it would be awful if we jeopardized all that we had for a stupid infatuation. Beside that, she was quite serious about swearing off men. I told her that I respected that but then, my heart was hard to convince.

A few days later, we went out for lunch. She ordered ice cream for both of us in one cup and fed me with a spoon. 'Alright, we are back in the race,' my heart screamed and how wrong it was!

I popped the question again on phone the same night and got turned down. She sounded irritated by my advances and I decided to shut my feelings down. The next two years, I kept my feelings in check and became what she needed me to be. A good friend. We discussed random things and wondered about life in general. People wondered if we were dating and she denied it vehemently while I secretly enjoyed those insinuations for they were all I had.

But then, on a fateful night, she phoned me to tell me that she had fallen in love. I held the phone close to my ears. It was the sound of my heart breaking. 'But I thought you were done with relationships,' I said. 'That was two years ago, silly,' she said.

I remembered how close I had felt to her in those two years. I wondered if I had gone too platonic; so much so that she could not see my feelings for her. I pretended to be OK and congratulated her on her newfound love for men.

But perhaps that was the day, after two freaking years, that I got closure on her. Well, I do not blame her for she offered nothing more than friendship but yes, sometimes you wish you could change certain parts. And hey! That's life!

She had chosen her prince after years of deliberation. He wasn't the man who could just do a neat trick or tell a good joke. He was a man of her dreams. A man who could keep her happy for years and years. She had met many who tried to fit the bill but, she knew in her heart that there was someone else. Someone who wanted to make her smile. Not just make her smile, someone who wanted to see her smile and let the rest of the world dissolve in thin air.

So, she wanted their wedding to be perfect. She wanted to glow on that special day. Because she knew that this day and hereon, everything would be different. She wanted to be born again on her wedding day. She knew that a man who wanted her to follow him was not her man. A man who had no plan was not her man. She knew that her man was the one who stood tall and held her by the hand. A man who wanted to walk with her, by her side. A counsel, a companion and much more than a friend. For such a man, she wanted to dress up. She wanted to leave no stone unturned. There is nothing wrong with a small ceremony. It is the happiness of the heart that counts. And she was counting big on it.

A Dress

I want a dress,
that has the moon.
Over which,
he can swoon.

Be it a ball gown,
or empire waist.
All doubt shall
be put to rest.

I want you here,
I want you now.
On this altar,
I want a vow.

A vow that you,
will value this.
And seal it then,
with the sweetest kiss.

I need you to,
stay up late.
I need you to
become my fate.

On this day,
under the sun,
I want you to,
have some fun.

Get off that chair,
and let's dance.
And let's begin
a lasting romance.

I want our story,
in one big book.
Ever since you came,
darlin' I've been shook.

And I want this
newness to last.
"Can we grow old?"
Not so fast.
